Pill bugs and their relatives, kept two ways at once: as self-sustaining cleanup crews inside bioactive enclosures, and as display cultures in their own right, collected for colour morphs the way other hobbies collect fish strains.

The entire market runs on reproduction speed, and understanding that saves money immediately. Fast-breeding species (Porcellio, common Armadillidium) turn any premium into a commodity within a couple of years, because every established culture produces continuous surplus; the record of every expensive morph in those genera is a decline curve. Slow breeders (the tropical Cubaris types, the giant and spiny species) hold value longer for structural reasons, not marketing ones. No isopod is an investment; some just depreciate slower.

One warning specific to this group: trade names dominate, especially in Cubaris, and many popular forms are not the genus their label claims. The name is doing identification work it cannot support, so buy from photographs and sources rather than words.

Everything ships easily, establishes readily on leaf litter and calcium, and scales from a deli cup to a display bin. Buy starter cultures rather than counts, and buy once: a functioning colony is a permanent supply.
