Wolf spiders, and H. carolinensis is the largest in the United States: a heavy-bodied, nocturnal hunting spider that builds no web and runs prey down.

The reason to keep one is maternal behavior. Females carry the egg sac attached to the spinnerets, and after hatching the spiderlings climb onto her abdomen and ride there for days. Very few arachnids do anything comparable and watching it is worth the enclosure space.

Almost entirely wild-collected across North America, so prices are very low, availability is seasonal, and specimens are adults with unknown remaining lifespan. Females live a few years, males considerably less. Nobody breeds these commercially and nobody needs to.
