Genus Hymenopus

1 species Hymenopus — commonly said as hy-MEN-oh-pus

The orchid mantis: the most famous insect mimic on earth, a mantis shaped and colored as a flower so convincingly that pollinators fly to it, which is the point. Juvenile females in full pink-and-white are the postcard; adults broaden and pale.

The keeping is precise rather than hard: warmth, meaningful humidity, height for the hanging molt, and flying prey, which the ambush is built for. Males are far smaller and mature fast, a mismatch that complicates breeding and shapes supply.

The mantis clock governs everything: under a year of life, availability pulsing with hatchings, nymphs the only rational purchase. Captive breeding carries the market, the pink photographs drive perpetual demand, and the premium over the hardy garden mantids buys the costume on the same annual term. It remains the group's gateway drug.

Rarity BETA Rarity is supply, and only supply: the tier is how many sellers have ever carried a species, and for a single seller, how many separate listings. Price is not part of it, and neither is how recently it appeared. Tiers are given to tarantula species only.
