Roaches

Two hobbies share this page. The feeder side keeps roaches as infrastructure: colonies that convert kitchen scraps into soft-bodied prey at industrial rates, chosen mainly by whether they can climb smooth surfaces (lobster roaches can; the Blaberus group cannot, which is most of why it displaced crickets). The display side keeps them as animals: Madagascar hissers that vocalise, glowspot roaches, domed island species, and cave dwellers with real presence.

Both sides run on the same economics, which are the purest in the hobby: an established colony produces continuous surplus, so prices sit at a permanent floor and cannot rise. The only movement is on newly introduced species, whose premiums erode as cultures spread, and the erosion never takes long. A starter colony is a one-time purchase in every sense; nobody buys roaches twice on purpose.

What differentiates listings is species, colony size, and life stage mix rather than anything about individual animals. For feeders, buy at colony scale and skip the intermediate step. For display species, the modest premiums on the less common forms are the closest this group comes to a collector market, and even those follow the standard colony-insect decline. Undemanding, unkillable, and honest about it.
