Mantises

The whole mantis market runs on one biological fact: these animals live less than a year. The population turns over annually, availability follows breeding cycles rather than demand, and every purchase is a season ticket rather than a pet in the tarantula sense. That single fact generates every rule of thumb the group has: buy nymphs, not adults, because an adult's remaining time is measured in weeks; expect availability to pulse with hatchings; and treat an ootheca (egg case) as what it is, dozens of mantises with a hatch date attached.

The keeping is simple and specific: height for moulting is the one non-negotiable, because mantises moult hanging and a fall is fatal; flying prey suits nearly everything better than crawling feeders; and the ornate species (flower mantids, dead-leaf mimics, orchid mantis) want more warmth and humidity than the hardy garden giants.

Price inside the group tracks appearance and little else. The Asian giants are the accessible entry and the practical first mantis; the mimics and flower species carry premiums for geometry and colour on what is otherwise the same keeping experience and the same clock. Nothing here is dangerous, everything here is watchable, and the year is the honest term of the arrangement.
