Genus Epiperipatus

1 species

Velvet worms, and the deepest strangeness the site carries: soft-bodied walking fossils on stubby unjointed legs, essentially unchanged for half a billion years, that hunt by firing twin jets of adhesive slime to entangle prey. They are not insects, arachnids, or myriapods; they are their own phylum, and keeping one is keeping a separate experiment in being an animal.

They are also genuinely delicate: they breathe through pores they cannot close, so humidity is life support, and the keeping is a sealed, moss-lined, springtail-stocked microhabitat held permanently damp and cool. Handling costs them water; restraint is the kindness.

Central and South American supply is rare and captive breeding rarer, so listings are single events priced on uniqueness. The slime cannon alone justifies the phylum's shelf space.

Rarity BETA Rarity is supply, and only supply: the tier is how many sellers have ever carried a species, and for a single seller, how many separate listings. Price is not part of it, and neither is how recently it appeared. Tiers are given to tarantula species only.
