Genus Elliptorhina

2 species

The Madagascar hissing roaches beyond the famous one: the same island lineage, the same audible hiss produced by forcing air through the spiracles, in species the trade knows less well.

Keeping is hisser standard: warm, dry-leaning enclosures with cover and climbing structure, fruit-and-grain feeding, and colonies that establish readily and persist indefinitely. Docile, flightless, long lived by insect standards, and handleable in the way almost nothing else in the hobby is.

Established colonies produce continuous surplus, which caps prices permanently across the genus. The market differentiates on species rarity and pattern rather than any difference in keeping, and premiums on the less common hissers follow the standard colony-insect arc: real at introduction, eroding as cultures spread. A starter colony is a one-time purchase.

Rarity BETA Rarity is supply, and only supply: the tier is how many sellers have ever carried a species, and for a single seller, how many separate listings. Price is not part of it, and neither is how recently it appeared. Tiers are given to tarantula species only.
