Genus Buthus

3 species

The Mediterranean and North African buthid genus that gave the whole family its name, and a medically serious one: envenomations across its range are a documented clinical matter, and several species carry real weight.

Arid, burrow-holding, quick, and classically scorpion-shaped, which is the identification trap: they look like the generic scorpion of the imagination and carry more venom than the image suggests. Sealed housing, forceps, jurisdiction first.

Moroccan and adjacent supply moves thinly, the genus's species boundaries are under active revision, and trade labels lag the literature by years. The colour forms sell; the caution governs; and the species trade name on a Buthus listing deserves loose confidence.
