Genus Orthochirus

2 species Orthochirus — commonly said as or-thoh-KY-rus

Small jet-black buthid scorpions of the Middle East and Central Asia, compact enough to underestimate and venomous enough that underestimating them is the mistake. The genus sits above its size class medically, in a family where small never means safe.

Keeping is minimal: arid substrate, stone cover, warmth, and sealed, forceps-only maintenance. They are quick, nervous, and inclined to sting first among scorpions their size.

Middle Eastern supply moves thinly and irregularly, captive breeding is sparse, and the genus trades to the specialist desert-buthid shelf where the buyers already know the rule these entries keep repeating: in this family the venom does not scale with the body, and the small black ones deserve the same protocols as their famous large relatives.

Rarity BETA Rarity is supply, and only supply: the tier is how many sellers have ever carried a species, and for a single seller, how many separate listings. Price is not part of it, and neither is how recently it appeared. Tiers are given to tarantula species only.
