Genus Pandinus

Old World 1 species

The emperor scorpion, P. imperator, and one of the most recognizable invertebrates in the world.

Large, glossy black, heavily built, docile, communal, and possessed of venom mild enough that the sting is compared to a bee. Fluoresces brilliantly under UV. Genuinely a reasonable first scorpion and a reasonable one for a household.

It is also CITES Appendix II, listed in the 1990s after collection pressure in West Africa, and that listing is the whole market story. Export quotas from Ghana and Togo govern supply, imports arrive in batches, and prices firm noticeably when quotas tighten. Captive breeding is slow because gestation runs long and broods are modest, so it does not fill the gaps.
