Genus Cyrtopholis

New World 5 species

The Caribbean's workhorse terrestrials: moderate to large burrowing tarantulas spread across Cuba, Hispaniola and the surrounding islands, faster and more defensive than their mainland Central American relatives, and largely ignored by a hobby that reserves its Caribbean attention for Phormictopus.

They burrow seriously when young, settle into hides as adults, and take food with enthusiasm. New World, urticating hairs present and used. Nothing about the keeping is difficult.

Island supply defines the market. Cuban export is nonexistent and Hispaniolan movement is thin, so captive lines carry everything, and the genus's low profile means those lines are shallow. Species identification within Cyrtopholis is soft at the listing level, with island and locality labels doing most of the work. The photographs are worth more than the names, and the genus overall represents the unglamorous end of a Caribbean fauna whose glamorous end costs several times more for a similar keeping experience.

Rarity BETA Rarity is supply, and only supply: the tier is how many sellers have ever carried a species, and for a single seller, how many separate listings. Price is not part of it, and neither is how recently it appeared. Tiers are given to tarantula species only.
