Genus Myrmekiaphila

2 species

North America's wafer-lid trapdoor spiders: burrowing mygalomorphs of the southeastern states that dig silk-lined tubes capped with thin, flexible doors, and spend essentially their entire lives inside them.

The keeping is a landscape in a container: deep, firm substrate that holds a burrow, stable moisture, and patience, because the animal you bought is a door that occasionally opens. Females live for many years. Venom is unremarkable, and the no-handling rule that applies to all mygalomorphs applies here on principle rather than medical weight.

Supply is thin seasonal collection, mostly of wandering males whose remaining lifespan is measured in months, which is the purchase detail listings rarely disclose. Females are the animal worth having and the animal rarely offered. The trapdoor market is small, specialist, and priced by scarcity of the sex that matters.

Rarity BETA Rarity is supply, and only supply: the tier is how many sellers have ever carried a species, and for a single seller, how many separate listings. Price is not part of it, and neither is how recently it appeared. Tiers are given to tarantula species only.
